Khammam

Khammam Lok Sabha Constituency is one of the 17 parliamentary constituencies in Telangana and is located in the eastern part of the state. Centred around Khammam city, the constituency covers large parts of Khammam district and portions of the former undivided Khammam region. It is one of Telangana's most agriculturally productive and politically significant parliamentary constituencies.

The constituency is known for its fertile agricultural lands, irrigation facilities, thriving chilli markets and strong commercial activity. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, supported by the Nagarjuna Sagar canal system, tanks and groundwater resources. Paddy, cotton, chilli, maize and mango are among the major crops cultivated across the region. Khammam city serves as a major commercial, educational and healthcare hub for eastern Telangana. Trade, agro-processing, transportation, education and government services contribute significantly to economic activity and employment.

Khammam has long been one of Telangana's most politically influential parliamentary constituencies. Historically, the constituency has been a stronghold of the Congress and Left parties, although it has also witnessed significant electoral contests involving the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in different periods.

The constituency has a unique political culture shaped by agrarian movements, tribal rights campaigns, cooperative institutions and Left-wing influence. Agriculture, irrigation, tribal welfare, employment generation and infrastructure development have consistently shaped electoral outcomes. Khammam often attracts considerable political attention because of its strategic location bordering Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
