BRS MLA Defections to Congress
Since the December 2023 Assembly elections, 10 MLAs from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have defected to the ruling Congress party (INC) in Telangana. These legislators officially joined the Congress in batches, primarily between March and April 2024.
Defected MLAs:
- Danam Nagender (Khairatabad constituency)
- Kadiyam Srihari (Station Ghanpur constituency)
- Tellam Venkat Rao (Bhadrachalam constituency)
- Pocharam Srinivas Reddy (Banswada constituency; former Assembly Speaker)
- Dr. M. Sanjay Kumar (Jagtial constituency)
- Arekapudi Gandhi (Serilingampally constituency)
- T. Prakash Goud (Rajendranagar constituency)
- Gudem Mahipal Reddy (Patancheru constituency)
- Kale Yadaiah (Chevella constituency)
- Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy (Gadwal constituency)
The BRS leadership filed disqualification petitions against all 10 MLAs under the anti-defection law. Following directions from the Supreme Court to expedite the proceedings, the Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly dismissed the disqualification petitions against five of the defecting MLAs. Proceedings relating to the remaining legislators have continued to attract public and legal scrutiny.
