How to Update Your Address in the Electoral Roll

A voter updating their address in the electoral roll after moving home

If you have moved to a new house, you should update your address in the Electoral Roll so that you can vote from your current place of residence. The Election Commission of India (ECI) allows voters to update their address through Form 8. The procedure depends on whether you have moved within the same Assembly Constituency or to a different Assembly Constituency.

Before You Apply

Keep the following ready:

  • EPIC (Voter ID) Number
  • Mobile number
  • Proof of your new address(if required)
  • Supporting documents(if requested by the Election Commission)

Which Scenario Applies?

Use Form 8 in both cases — just pick the option that matches your move.

Scenario 1: Shifted Within the Same Assembly Constituency

If you have moved to another house but your new address is within the same Assembly Constituency, apply through Form 8 by selecting the option "Shifting of Residence Within Assembly Constituency."

Form 8 option: “Shifting of Residence Within Assembly Constituency

Examples

  • Moved from one street to another in the same town.
  • Shifted to a different apartment in the same locality.
  • Purchased a new house within the same Assembly Constituency.

Scenario 2: Shifted to Another Assembly Constituency

If your new residence falls under a different Assembly Constituency, also use Form 8, selecting "Shifting of Residence from One Assembly Constituency to Another." The Election Commission will process the transfer of your voter registration to the new constituency after verification.

Form 8 option: “Shifting of Residence from One Assembly Constituency to Another
