Viluppuram

Viluppuram Lok Sabha Constituency is one of the 39 parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu and is reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). Located in the northeastern part of the state, the constituency covers major portions of Viluppuram district and represents one of Tamil Nadu's largest predominantly rural parliamentary constituencies. Viluppuram town serves as the principal administrative, educational and commercial centre, while also functioning as an important railway and road junction connecting northern and southern Tamil Nadu.

The constituency is characterised by fertile agricultural plains, extensive rural settlements, historic temple towns and rapidly growing market centres. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, supported by irrigation tanks, seasonal rivers and groundwater resources. Paddy, sugarcane, groundnut and cashew cultivation dominate the agricultural landscape. Small-scale industries, dairy farming, trade, education and government services also contribute significantly to economic activity. Its strategic location along the Chennai–Tiruchirappalli National Highway and major railway routes has enhanced its importance as a transportation and logistics hub.

The Viluppuram Lok Sabha Constituency comprises the following six Assembly constituencies:

Viluppuram has traditionally been one of the politically significant Scheduled Caste-reserved parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The constituency has witnessed electoral contests involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Agriculture, Scheduled Caste welfare, rural infrastructure, education, employment generation and irrigation have consistently shaped electoral politics. The constituency has also been an important centre for Dalit political mobilisation and social justice movements, making it politically influential beyond its electoral boundaries.

Agricultural sustainability remains one of the constituency's biggest priorities.
