Araku

Araku Lok Sabha Constituency is one of the 25 parliamentary constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Located in the northeastern part of the state, the constituency covers vast tribal and hilly regions of the Eastern Ghats and is among the geographically largest parliamentary constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. The constituency spans parts of Alluri Sitharama Raju, Parvathipuram Manyam and Vizianagaram districts and is characterised by dense forests, hill ranges, river valleys and tribal habitations.

Araku is nationally known for its scenic landscapes, coffee plantations, biodiversity and rich tribal culture. The constituency is home to several tribal communities including the Konda Dora, Bagata, Valmiki, Gadaba, Jatapu, Savara and Konda Reddi tribes. Agriculture, horticulture, coffee cultivation, forest-based livelihoods, eco-tourism and government services form the backbone of the local economy. The region is also historically associated with tribal movements and freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju.

Araku has traditionally been one of the most important tribal parliamentary constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. Since its formation, the constituency has witnessed electoral contests among the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and various tribal leaders. Issues relating to tribal welfare, forest rights, land ownership, education, healthcare and infrastructure development have consistently shaped electoral politics.

The constituency has often reflected broader political trends among tribal communities in Andhra Pradesh. Tribal empowerment, implementation of the Forest Rights Act, livelihood opportunities and connectivity to remote habitations remain major political themes during elections.

Infrastructure development remains one of the biggest challenges in Araku. Many villages are located in remote hilly areas where access to roads, healthcare and educational facilities remains limited. Tribal farmers seek better support for coffee cultivation, horticulture, millet farming and value-added agricultural products.

Expansion of road networks, digital connectivity, drinking water supply and healthcare infrastructure remains a key priority. Sustainable tourism development, tribal entrepreneurship and employment generation are also important concerns. Protection of tribal land rights and conservation of forest ecosystems continue to be major policy issues.
